The discipline

Functional Nutritionist

It counts calories. It eliminates food groups. It prescribes macros, recommends supplements, and builds meal plans. And for many people — people who eat well, who try hard, who follow the guidance — it still does not resolve the fatigue. The inflammation does not settle. The hormones remain disrupted. The gut continues to dysfunction. The weight does not shift in the direction it should.

That is because food is not the endpoint. It is the input. What determines your health is what happens to that food at a cellular level — how it is digested, absorbed, metabolised, and ultimately used by your mitochondria, your immune system, your endocrine system, and your brain.

Functional nutrition exists to answer the question conventional dietary advice was never designed to ask: why is this happening to me — and what does my specific biology need to resolve it?

What it is

Functional nutrition is a clinically-led discipline that investigates the relationship between nutrition, metabolism, gut health, and systemic biological function — and uses that investigation to resolve the root causes of chronic symptoms rather than manage them indefinitely.

It is not a diet. It is not a supplement protocol handed out without context. It is a precise clinical process: map the biology, identify what is disrupted, understand why, and build a targeted nutritional and lifestyle intervention that addresses the actual dysfunction — not the symptom sitting on top of it.

At our clinic, functional nutrition is practised within a wider systems-biology framework. Our functional nutritionist works alongside our functional medicine doctor, physiotherapist, and advanced therapy team — because in a body where everything is connected, nutrition that does not integrate with the rest of the clinical picture will always be incomplete.

What we investigate

The work begins with understanding your biology at a level most nutritional consultations never reach. Depending on your presentation, our investigation may include:

Gut microbiome analysis

A comprehensive mapping of your gut bacteria, fungi, parasites, and intestinal permeability markers. The microbiome governs not just digestion but immune regulation, neurotransmitter production, hormonal metabolism, and inflammatory tone. We do not guess at it. We sequence it.

OligoScan — cellular mineral & heavy metal status

Most nutritional deficiencies do not show in standard blood panels. OligoScan measures intracellular levels of 30+ minerals, trace elements, and heavy metals in real time — revealing the nutritional landscape inside the cell, not just in circulation. Magnesium deficiency, zinc insufficiency, copper dysregulation, toxic metal accumulation — these drive fatigue, hormonal disruption, cognitive decline, and metabolic dysfunction in ways that no dietary questionnaire can detect.

DNA nutrition profiling

Your genetic variants determine how you methylate, detoxify, absorb nutrients, metabolise fats and carbohydrates, and respond to specific dietary inputs. A MTHFR variant changes your folate metabolism. An APOE variant changes your cardiovascular and cognitive risk profile. Nutrition built around your genome is precision medicine — not personalised wellness.

Advanced metabolic & hormonal markers

Including fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, organic acids, amino acid profiles, thyroid cascade, adrenal function, sex hormones, and inflammatory markers that go significantly beyond a standard blood panel.

Telomere analysis

A direct measure of biological age at the cellular level. Nutritional status, oxidative stress, and lifestyle factors are among the most powerful determinants of telomere length. This gives us a baseline for your biological ageing trajectory — and a measure of how effectively your intervention is reversing it.

Suitability

Who it is for

Our functional nutritionist works across the full range of chronic and complex presentations. The areas where functional nutrition delivers the most significant clinical impact:

  • 01

Gut health & microbiome restoration — IBS, IBD, bloating, SIBO, leaky gut, food intolerances, microbiome dysbiosis, chronic digestive dysfunction

  • 02

Hormonal health — PCOS, thyroid disorders, adrenal dysfunction, oestrogen dominance, perimenopause and menopause, male hormonal decline and low testosterone

  • 03

Metabolic health & weight regulation — Insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes reversal, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, chronic weight dysregulation

  • 04

Brain health & cognitive function — Brain fog, poor concentration, memory decline, neuroinflammation, anxiety, depression — all of which have significant nutritional and metabolic drivers

  • 05

Immune function & autoimmunity — Recurrent infections, chronic low-grade inflammation, autoimmune conditions, post-viral syndromes, long Covid

  • 06

Energy & mitochondrial health — Chronic fatigue, ME/CFS, post-exertional malaise, mitochondrial dysfunction, adrenal burnout

  • 07

Cardiovascular health — Lipid dysregulation, hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, homocysteine elevation — addressed through nutritional medicine and lifestyle intervention

  • 08

Cellular age reversal & longevity — Reducing biological age through nutritional optimisation, telomere support, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting the cellular repair mechanisms that determine how fast you age

Integration

Our approach

Once we understand your biology, we build a clinical nutrition plan that addresses what we have found — not what we have assumed. That plan integrates:

  • Targeted supplementation — Evidence-based, dose-specific, timed to your biology. Not a generic supplement stack — every recommendation is driven by what the investigation has found.
  • Gut restoration programmes — For dysbiosis, intestinal permeability, or pathogenic overgrowth — structured 5R protocols integrating dietary medicine with colon hydrotherapy and targeted probiotic therapy.
  • Nutritional protocols — Therapeutic protocols tailored to your specific deficiencies, metabolic type, genetic variants, and clinical goals — whether resolving gut dysbiosis, reversing insulin resistance, or rebuilding mitochondrial energy production.
  • Integration with advanced modalities — Red light therapy, PEMF, HBOT, and far infrared sauna are sequenced alongside your nutrition plan when the clinical picture calls for it — each amplifying what nutrition alone cannot achieve at the cellular level.
  • Ongoing monitoring & recalibration — We track progress through repeat biomarker testing, monitor your response to the intervention, and adjust the protocol as your biology evolves.

The difference between a nutrition consultation and functional nutrition is the difference between advice and investigation. We do not tell you to eat more vegetables. We find out why your cells cannot use what you are already giving them.

Is functional nutrition different from seeing a dietitian?

A dietitian typically works within national dietary guidelines and is most skilled at managing specific clinical conditions through macronutrient and micronutrient protocols. Functional nutrition goes further — investigating the underlying biological and metabolic reasons why standard nutritional approaches are not working, using advanced diagnostics and systems-biology methodology to identify and address root causes.

What tests will I need?

This depends on your presentation and clinical history. We do not run tests speculatively. Following your initial consultation, your nutritionist and clinical team will identify which investigations are most relevant — gut microbiome analysis, OligoScan, DNA profiling, hormonal panels, metabolic markers, or telomere analysis — selected on the basis of clinical need.

Do I need to stop eating certain foods?

Dietary change is often part of a functional nutrition protocol, but it is targeted and evidence-based — not generic elimination. Any food modifications recommended will be specific to what your investigation has found. You will always understand exactly why a recommendation is being made.

How does this work alongside the clinic's therapies?

Functional nutrition and the clinic's advanced therapy modalities are designed to work together. Nutritional medicine builds the biochemical foundation. Therapies like HBOT, red light therapy, PEMF, and far infrared sauna enhance the cellular processes that nutritional interventions are working to support. Your nutritionist coordinates with the clinical team to ensure your nutrition protocol and therapy programme are directed toward the same biological goals.

How long before I see results?

Many clients notice improvements in energy, digestion, and cognitive clarity within four to six weeks of a targeted protocol. More complex hormonal or metabolic presentations typically require three to six months of consistent clinical work. We track progress through repeat testing, so changes are always measured — not just reported.
