Functional Assessment
A functional assessment is designed to detect something different — the long gradient of declining function that precedes disease, often by years or decades. The fatigue that does not reach the threshold for diagnosis. The hormonal imbalance that falls just within range. The gut dysfunction that drives skin, mood, and immunity without ever producing a single abnormal result.
Functional assessment asks a different question: not "is there pathology?" but "is the system performing?" It evaluates the quality of biological function — not the presence or absence of clinical findings — and it treats the body as a single, integrated system rather than a collection of organ-specific problems.
What it is
A functional assessment is a comprehensive, multi-dimensional clinical evaluation conducted by our functional health practitioners.
It integrates a detailed health history, symptom timeline analysis, lifestyle evaluation, physical assessment where indicated, and a targeted laboratory investigation plan built around your specific clinical picture.
The output is not a report of normal and abnormal values. It is a clinical narrative — a coherent account of how your body is functioning, what is driving your symptoms, which systems are under the greatest burden, and what a targeted, prioritised intervention looks like.
How it works
Your first appointment is 60 to 90 minutes.
It begins with a detailed exploration of your health history — not just current symptoms, but the trajectory that has produced them. Significant health events, dietary patterns, stress history, sleep, energy, digestion, hormones, cognitive function, and emotional experience are all part of the clinical picture. This is not a form to complete. It is a conversation.
From this, your practitioner maps a clinical timeline — the narrative of your health — and identifies the investigation framework most likely to reveal the underlying drivers. A targeted laboratory testing plan is agreed, combining the investigations most relevant to your clinical presentation.
Results are reviewed in a follow-up consultation where every finding is placed in clinical context — connected to your history, to your symptoms, and to each other — and a personalised intervention plan is built around the complete picture.
Ongoing care follows at intervals appropriate to your clinical complexity and goals.
What makes it different
Most healthcare encounters are focused on a complaint. A functional assessment is focused on a person.
The difference is clinical depth. Rather than managing symptoms with pharmaceutical suppression, functional assessment investigates the upstream drivers generating those symptoms — the nutritional deficits, hormonal imbalances, gut dysfunction, toxic burden, inflammatory triggers, and lifestyle factors that are the actual cause, not the consequence.
It treats interconnection as the clinical reality it is. A gut dysfunction contributing to inflammation, affecting hormonal balance, impairing neurotransmitter production, and manifesting as depression — this is not multi-system complexity requiring multiple specialists. It is a single biological story, which a functional assessment reads as one.

Who it is for
A functional assessment is for anyone whose health questions have not been fully answered. It speaks most directly to:
-
01
People with persistent symptoms — fatigue, pain, digestive dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, brain fog — that have not been fully explained or addressed
-
02
Those with chronic conditions managed by medication but not resolved at the root
-
03
Anyone entering a significant health transition — perimenopause, post-illness recovery, major lifestyle change — who wants a thorough functional baseline
-
04
High-performers seeking to optimise rather than merely maintain
-
05
Anyone who wants a healthcare relationship built on depth, precision, and genuine investment in their long-term biology
How is a functional assessment different from seeing my GP?
Your GP is trained to identify and manage disease. A functional health practitioner evaluates the quality of biological function — identifying the drivers of suboptimal health long before disease thresholds are reached. The question changes from 'is anything wrong?' to 'is everything working at its best?'
What laboratory tests might be included?
This depends entirely on your clinical picture. Common inclusions are comprehensive hormone panels, full thyroid assessment, inflammatory markers, nutrient status, gut health markers, and metabolic indicators. Your practitioner selects tests based on your specific presentation — not a generic protocol.
How many appointments will I need?
Typically two initial appointments — the consultation and the results review. Follow-up frequency depends on your goals and clinical complexity. Many clients schedule quarterly reviews. Others build a longer-term relationship with ongoing oversight.
Do I need to have existing health concerns to benefit from this?
Not at all. Many clients are relatively well — they simply want to understand their biology at a deeper level, optimise their function, and build a long-term health strategy on a solid evidence base. Prevention, approached with this level of clinical depth, is the most powerful form of healthcare.
